What is a dental crown?

Dental crowns are “caps” that cover all visible surfaces of a natural tooth. They’re a versatile treatment option that can address numerous issues, and they’re also one of the most common dental procedures performed at Dr. Whyte Smile. 

Dental crowns can be manufactured from many different materials, but porcelain crowns offer outstanding durability and beauty. A well-designed porcelain crown is virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth.  

You can expect to enjoy many years of use from your new dental crown. To get the most from your investment, take care not to place undue force on your crown by chewing ice, biting down on hard objects, or using your teeth to open packages.

Chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramic (CEREC) dental crowns uses computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) to craft your custom crown in one day. This allows you to come in for your restoration and walk out with your new smile.

The process of creating a dental crown begins with gathering X-rays and digital imaging to determine the exact size and shape of the tooth and adjacent teeth. A portion of your natural tooth tissue is removed to make room for the dental crown. 

Once your new crown is ready, it’s checked for fit before being cemented into place, completing the restoration. There’s no need for special care, simply brush and floss normally. During routine dental exams, your crown will be checked along with the rest of your teeth.
